The thing is though, if a nation's a world power the odds are good your country has to deal with it regularly, so it's a good idea to know about the parts of its past that had a large and continuing effect.
For rather a long time, almost the extent of NZ's interaction with the US has been "Keep your dirty nuclear-powered ships out of our waters" and that's about it. We don't really want your tourists. You're too loud and we can make more money of the Japanese. Don't want your products - our produce is superior, our wine much more delicious and our technology from people who are closer (and, in the main, much better at it), and we don't take part in your wars since Vietnam. You definitely do not need to know the USA's history when that's your stance.

NZ's not really very interested in the USA. Too far away, and we're too small to be of note to you. NZ's much more interested in China these days; so much money to be made from our wool, milk and forestry there.
That might change one day - but only when the NZ government decides to end the nuclear ships stance. And these days, it's really your recent history that's more important. ~shrug~

I think when a country becomes a world power you need to cover more of its past.
