Well. Not so much. Rebekah Send a noteboard - 01/10/2010 02:28:55 PM
The thing is though, if a nation's a world power the odds are good your country has to deal with it regularly, so it's a good idea to know about the parts of its past that had a large and continuing effect.

For rather a long time, almost the extent of NZ's interaction with the US has been "Keep your dirty nuclear-powered ships out of our waters" and that's about it. We don't really want your tourists. You're too loud and we can make more money of the Japanese. Don't want your products - our produce is superior, our wine much more delicious and our technology from people who are closer (and, in the main, much better at it), and we don't take part in your wars since Vietnam. You definitely do not need to know the USA's history when that's your stance. ;)

NZ's not really very interested in the USA. Too far away, and we're too small to be of note to you. NZ's much more interested in China these days; so much money to be made from our wool, milk and forestry there.

That might change one day - but only when the NZ government decides to end the nuclear ships stance. And these days, it's really your recent history that's more important. ~shrug~

I think in history classes outside the US the topic is omitted altogether. *NM* - 01/10/2010 11:36:41 AM 319 Views
I'm fairly sure it isn't seen as a must know in the British educational system *NM* - 01/10/2010 11:42:07 AM 326 Views
Quite. And certainly not in New Zealand. *NM* - 01/10/2010 11:55:27 AM 343 Views
I'm sure you're right, but it shouldn't be, because the formative influence was/is huge. - 01/10/2010 01:15:09 PM 883 Views
Well, in university level American history courses, I'm sure it's mentioned. - 01/10/2010 01:20:56 PM 792 Views
I think when a country becomes a world power you need to cover more of its past. - 01/10/2010 02:00:54 PM 817 Views
Depends on how much that past mingles with yours. - 01/10/2010 02:08:35 PM 848 Views
Seems more like it depends on how the present mingles. - 01/10/2010 02:21:56 PM 758 Views
Well. Not so much. - 01/10/2010 02:28:55 PM 746 Views
I can see NZ taking that view, sure. - 01/10/2010 03:11:21 PM 853 Views
But more important, I would stay, is understanding your own country - 01/10/2010 02:34:22 PM 924 Views
That last certainly seems to be NZ's point of view. *NM* - 01/10/2010 02:34:59 PM 360 Views
