You say faction A makes Gateways into location X. Opposing faction B senses the channeling at X and Travels there to prevent the Gateways from opening.
Now, here's the first issue... What if faction A opens and Gateway and immediately sends in 5 channelers? These channelers can then block the defenders from B opening gateways at X. Meanwhile, soldiers are pouring through...
This does not match at all with the way Jordan described the dynamics of Traveling behind enemy lines.
More importantly, why would he say "ways to interfere with the forming of Gateways", if all he means is weave slicing? Why not say that?

I think there's some evidence in favor of the wards idea you are all missing.

there's no indication that the gateway isn't almost on top of a city

It's definitely possible that there can be a ward to detect a gateway opening.

We know that, for e.g., Sammael could detect the location of a Gateway

i think an automatic weave would be too complicated to cover any reasonable area.

I don't think you need to travel to the Gateway to disrupt it if the ward notifies you of location

I believe that you cannot make a ward completely preventing Traveling.
