Sanderson just makes him too much of a clown for me darius_sedai Send a noteboard - 05/12/2010 04:21:34 PM
I'm not trying to shoot anyone's opinions down, nor am I trying to say that the hatred for ToM isn't unfounded, I just would like to know why the people who do hate ToM (and there do seem to be a lot of you floating around) hated it so?

I can understand the writing style of BS really turning people off, but we kind of had to expect this of the middle of the "final book", didn't we? I mean, when RJ died, a good portion of tGS was either written or at least well prepared, and since BS has already stated before that the ending has been written by RJ, its safe to assume that AMoL will still have a good portion of RJ left in it. I personally don't hate BS's style; it takes some getting used to, but I don't think its as atrocious as people are making it out to be.

I personally rather liked ToM. tGS was much better (my second favorite of the series), but it was still good, considering we do have CoT and WH to look back on. Sure, there were moments when I cringed, but there were moments like that in tGS as well (Rand shaking his fist at the DO, anyone?). I thought Mat was written well, and while I know certain things are just not gonna be explained, I'm okay with that. Maybe its just me; I've been reading since I was 2, and over the years I've come to accept that things don't always have to be explained. Not saying that those of you who want everything explained are wrong; just saying that is who I am.

Anyway, I guess this thread is really just a rant thread for those who want to voice their ire, their frustration, and their outright hate for ToM. I would like to understand why.

TOM had some glaring problems ... For me it was still enjoyable, but there were definitely moments that made me cringe.

I can't believe you thought he got Mat right! Personally Mat was once one of my favorite characters, now I don't particularly love him. RJ's use of Mat's particular sense of humor and moral code was very different than how Brandon is portraying him.

I agree. It's not that BS's Mat is good or bad to me. Both types of Mat are good. They're just so very different.

thinking about his best smiles and all his "looking at the serving girls for Talmanes" crap bugged me ... RJs Mat would have stared all day and never even realized he was leering!
Domani Drag Queen in the White Tower ... Aran'gar watch out!
