Bureaucratic overreach in a Blue State - Update damookster Send a noteboard - 02/11/2024 02:11:32 PM

It is difficult to express in words just how angry I am about what happened this week in New York State with Peanut the squirrel. For any who live in a bubble, Peanut was a baby squirrel, raised from infancy by NY state resident Mark Longo when his mother was killed by a car. Mark had Peanut as a pet for seven years, and as P'Nut, he was the star of an Instagram account with over 500,000 followers.

Apparently one or more of Mark's neighbors called the state and complained he was harboring wild animals without a license. Yes, his pastime was rescuing injured animals and releasing them back into the wild when healed, and yes he did not have a state permit to do so. So agents of the state commission demanded entry into his home, without a warrant and seized Peanut and an injured raccoon Mark was treating. When the terrified squirrel bit one if the agents on the hand, THEY TOOK BOTH ANIMALS TO THEIR LAB AND KILLED THEM TO TEST FOR RABIES!

His biggest mistake was not telling these stormtroopers to get the fuck off his property unless they had a warrant and then immediately calling his lawyer. Christ on a cracker, NEVER let them in the house without signed papers.

Exigent circumstances? A house pet who had lived in the home for seven fucking years had rabies and they weren't aware? Bullshit.

Let me repeat myself. This occurred in NY State, where the Governor is a Democrat and the legislature is also controlled by the Democrats.

But all Republicans are Nazis.

UPDATE

10 armed agents served a surprise warrant on the home of Mark Longo and his wife, based on an anonymous tip. They were forced to wait outside while a five hour search took place. The Longo's avocation is maintaining an amateur wildlife rescue shelter that currently houses about 350 animals, all kept outdoors except for Peanut the squirrel and Fred the raccoon. Peanut had been a housepet for seven years. Fred was brought to them four months ago. No animals were seized other than the two allowed in the home, which were then both euthanized so their brains could be tested for rabies. This summary is mine based on multiple sources.

Call me crazy but I suspect active rabies just might have manifested itself within four months, let alone SEVEN years. And that doesn't take into account how long Fred might have been with the person who brought him to the Longos because he was injured. A so far unsubstantiated report identifies the anonymous caller and claims she bragged about getting that "little rat." As I said, so far unsubstantiated, but the individual has deleted all her social media accounts.

The real problem is the raccoon. Those are major vectors for rabies. - 02/11/2024 10:57:04 PM 34 Views

Public health ultimately matters a lot more than our pets, sad to say. - 03/11/2024 08:36:45 AM 33 Views
