Certainly things get moved around all the time, but they seem thematically appropriate. Yes, Gandalf never talks about "a far green country under a swift sunrise"--that's a dream Frodo has in the house of Tom Bombadil--but it seems a proper appropriation. And honestly, an enormous amount was kept nearly verbatim, and to great effect.
Maybe I just don't appreciate the novels sufficiently.
If it's any consolation, the Hobbit films were the first time I've ever been actively angry at how bad a movie was.
