I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's in the BG1/Icewind Dale 1 generation, not the BG2/ID2 generation. It's not a huge difference, but it's there.

and yeah, a few different save slots are good. There are quite a few branching plotlines.


The release schedule was:

BALDUR'S GATE (Nov 1998 )
TALES OF THE SWORD COAST (April 1999)
PLANESCAPE TORMENT (December 1999)
ICEWIND DALE (June 2000)
HEART OF WINTER (Early 2001)
BALDUR'S GATE 2 (September 2000)
THRONE OF BHAAL (June 2001)
ICEWIND DALE 2 (2002)

Seriously, a great time for RPG gaming. All of those plus MORROWIND, ANACHRONOX and the PC version of FINAL FANTASY VII came out in that four-and-a-bit span of time.
