I wonder what you meant exactly by "an experienced StarCraft player"?

Anyway, you can get pretty far just on the basics. For starters, you should always be making Probes (this is easier for Terran or Protoss, Zerg need some experience or intuition to know when to make Drones and when to make units). Then, you should always be spending your money. Your goal is to never have any minerals or vespene left over when you complete a round of production. Your producing buildings (Gateways/Warp Gates, Robotics Facilities, Stargates)should always be producing something.

Ideally, you should avoid queueing production, as that gives you the illusion of having spent more resources than you actually have, and those resources are in a vacuum, not available for you to do anything else with them. Hotkey your production structures and upgrade structure so you can easily cycle through them to see if they are working or not.

Scout your opponents so you know what they are doing. An early Probe scout in particular is useful in preventing cheeses like early Zergling Rush or a Protoss building Photon Cannons in your base.

If you really want to learn more, I recommend watching Day[9]'s shows, as he is a WCG participant for StarCraft and is quite good at expressing himself and simplifying concepts.

I might be able to help more if you give me a specific situation, or better yet upload a replay that demonstrates what you're having trouble with. Still, I am myself merely an amateur, so take my advice for what it is.
