As a Kiwi import to Scotland, that's always amused me.

For several years, whenever he has won anything, English commentators have referred to him as a British tennis player. When he loses, they refer to him as Scottish. Us Scots are thrawn, thrawn buggers about things like that and it winds us up the wrong way.
It makes me giggle every single time. And my Scottish friends always mention it at the time on Facebook &c so there's lots of opportunity for amusement.
Interestingly, after the Olympics and US Open wins, there were, for the first time I can remember, a few pundits referring to him as Scottish despite his winning...
I noticed that. And they weren't even Scottish!

So, I found this video explaining the differences between The UK, Great Britain, England, etc.

Great Britain is an island containing England, Scotland and Wales.

Is that why Andy Murray is getting credit for being British? *NM*

They keep saying "the first British man to win a Grand Slam title since 1938"

Mostly that's an indication of just how desperate they were before that happened.

Yes and no. Mostly no.

So would you say

Kind of, but not precisely. It's probably the easiest way to look at it, though. *NM*

True, but it always felt very awkward to me, even when I considered mens tennis worth watching.

Not all Scots dislike being called British. Only the Nationalist ones.
