Those of you who know me well, know that I am pro-life. This is not a "preserve the life of the baby" type of situation. This is a preserve the life of the mother situation. She was 17 weeks along. She was not going to be able to carry anywhere near term. Let's understand this. The baby was going to die either way....either through waiting or through the abortion procedure.
Instead, the mother's life was at immediate & distinct danger. Of course, in situations such as this, the child's life would have to be sacrified to save that of the mother. This is not an example of "pro-life" decision making.
I'm not against abortion in the case of the mother's life being in jeopardy. Why have both of them die instead of just one? But just to state it, for every one of these types of instances, how many are elective procedures? You don't set rules according to the most rare of instnaces. You set rules based on the majority, and make allowances for the exceptions.

they specifically told this woman she could not have an abortion because "this is a Catholic country". meaning, their religious doctrine forbids them from performing it under any circumstances. i'm sure when the investigation is done, they will come up with some other reason but from all the reports about this case. from what i've read, there *is* an exception for the life of the mother but for whatever reason, the hospital did not follow this.
also, as the cliche goes there are always exceptions to the rule. it's all fine and dandy to put certain limitations on abortions, but as this case shows, sometimes the exception *does* need to be made. and you can't allow yourself to be overwhelmed by a majority decision when the exception is quite literally a life-and-death situation for everyone involved.
