They certainly have, they've just done it less and less recently Isaac Send a noteboard - 12/08/2012 09:39:53 PM
I was watching re-runs of Dragnet on Hulu, funny bit where they shake their heads at how 'Promiscuity is glamorous, even homosexuality is praiseworthy'. It hasn't been that long, and in a lot of places Dems didn't just stay quiet or murmur about gay rights while talking against gay marriage, they pushed actively against it. Don't forget that Westboro Church scumbag ran on a Dem ticket. Now the left did get their act together on gay rights faster than the right, which is commendable, but the Dem Leadership has no moral authority (with some exceptions) on the issue, because most of them simply took a weak stand on an issue that deserves a strong moral one either way. It's not a middle ground issue, even if gay marriage itself is one people can be civil and disagree on.

and more dems voted for bush in florida in 2000 than nader's whole vote total, but guess who gets blamed for "spoiling" the election? just because rank and file republicans are more enlightened than their national leaders does not mean the republicans *image* is that of a centrist political party. even though the dems did not embrace gay marriage as an issue until obama "came out" in favor of it, they still didn't push bills through their respective state legislatures calling for specifically making marriage between gay people illegal. going back to the root of the whole issue, which party was the one to bring it up in the first place? it wasn't a dem who introduced DOMA in the house or senate. also, arguing "they do it too" doesn't really change the perception people are going to have about the parties and their political leanings left or right.

just to make the point clear: i am not arguing that the republicans are a far right party, i am only answering the post that they are taking far right positions, and therefore have a perception of being farther right than they probably are in actuality. when your party is led by people like palin, limbaugh and bachmann, you'll have to excuse the rest of the world for thinking they speak for all of you.

Being against gay marriage isn't "Far Right" it's about half the country and was about two-thirds or more or whole lifetime, you can't call anything far or fringe unless it's at least under a quarter of the population. Also, Bachmann got spit for vote in the primary and Limbaugh never ran for anything, Palin doesn't actually have very many extreme views that I know of and was only ever elected to Governor of a tiny state. BAchmann represents the part no more than Kucinch or McKinney, Palin is no more representative of the party than Liebermann (who got kicked out) or Edwards (who is a scumbag). Limbaugh, Olbermann. You want to talk about say McCain? Someone we did vote for?
