And/or let people bully you into having a "proper wedding".

I think if you have a lot of people there, some costs will inevitably get high (for example, food, seating, etc...), but a lot of stuff is pretty damned open to mitigation. I've had a friend send me a Save The Date wedding note, AND a wedding invitation. The latter after I informed her personally that I wouldn't be able to make it. Unnecessary pennies. I had another friend who was freaking about how much PHOTOS would cost (Apparently wedding photos cost A LOT). Give a friend a camera and take photos that way. No they won't be "As nice", but whatever. most people can pull off taking a reasonable still photo with a good camera in decent lighting.

It just seems so silly to me. i mean, if that's what you want GO FOR IT!! People should have the weddings they want!! But I hate it when people complain about cost (not saying this is you) and then keep trying to do a "perfect/proper" wedding... what's important is marrying someone you love. Anything on top of that is open to negotiation.
