Because the project is joint US-Brazilian, and the English "dictionary" of 45 000 words is meant to be mirrored by the Brazilian version that will come out soon, they removed lots of words that would look like false friends in Portuguese. They also removed a lot of other words for different reasons.
I agree that it will be on the low side for your actual vocabulary.
