Actually, most of those choices weren't mine and I opposed them. Joel Send a noteboard - 11/09/2010 04:09:43 PM
He chose to have a pet in the first place, which isn't cheap. He had more than one. The feed and regular vet bills for them over the years adds up to quite a lot. Getting and having pets are luxuries. He chooses to travel and has been doing so for a number of years if you've seen his posts. I'm sure he likes to travel. I do, too. When I can't afford it, I don't do it. He chooses not to take care of his teeth, because honey, 17 cavities is a sign of poor dental hygiene in someone his age.

Dental care can be expensive, so can lots of things. TVs are expensive. Computers are expensive. If you don't have the money, you get a loan and pay in installments. You certainly don't spend on luxuries and then demand others subsidize your choices.

Dental and medical care are no more essential than housing and food. If he told you he took $550 and spent it on travel instead of buying food or paying his mortgage/rent, I think you'd say he made poor choices and shouldn't expect us to pay for it. But for some reason his dental care is somehow excluded from any responsibility on is part.

So, yes, it is about all his choices and his life because he wants to make those choices and not have to live with what that means. He opened up his "personal life" to scrutiny when he chose to both make it public and then accept no judgments or consequences for it. And then, to top it all off, wants us to feel bad because we as a nation don't want to pay for his dental care which he didn't previously place such a high value on himself.

Mother's not young or in good health, which is part of why I'm living with her (and my biggest concern about moving out, but I can't have it both ways. ) I believe my comment when we got Buddy 13 years ago was, "you wanted a puppy, you take care of him" (not that it went down that way, of course. ) As for the travel "a number of years" is all of two. As of this summer. I'd never been farther than 200 miles from home before unless I was moving (which I've done twice via Greyhound, wastrel that I am) but I was working, making good money, the bank account was going up and I thought I could afford it. Then all hell broke loose; guess I was wrong.

I know I said I wouldn't respond further, but since you don't know wtf you're talking about it's pitiable watching you try to dissect my life. And yes, I should have taken better care of my teeth on my own, but we're far from the point where I MUST lose them. That the day is coming and there's no discernible way to avert it reflects very poorly on more than just me though.
