... it's really hard to be living on the other side of the world and wondering whether everyone's ok.
I don't think of New Zealand as an earthquake place for some reason, so I am always surprised when they talk about earthquakes in or around it.
We have volcanoes too.
NZ has around 14,000 recorded earthquakes every year. It's not often they're that big, though. The country is on the join of two tectonic plates so there's lots of seismic activity.

Worst damage was to my aunt & uncle's cars. Younger sister lost electricity to her house and has gone to stay with another sister. That big sister missed a flight to a friend's wedding because the airport was closed. That's as bad as it was for my family.
Not much worse for the area as a whole, though. There are loads of ruined buildings, but not much in the way of damage to people, thankfully.
