Arithon is so emo Gregor Clegane should give him a sound beating.
Not so much, I think. He's justifiably upset with life, but if he were "emo" he wouldn't go on and get things done. Also: he's pretty nasty.
The eternal hopelessness and foreknowledge this will go on for 500 years ( Davian's fountain ) it's just too depressing.
There are 5 story arcs, so it will finish in the last one. I think she's done 100+ years, it just doesn't seem like it because the major characters are all long lived.
The language is horrible, unfit for people who don't have an English major.
Bah. My brother doesn't have one of those. True, it took him a while to get into the books, but once in he really enjoyed the language.
Somethings were pretty cool, though. You can tell Janny Wurts really loves Athera. The Spliter worlds concept, the Fellowship of Seven, the Koriani, the enmity between the tribesmen and townfolk. Almost anything to do with setting is pitch perfect.
~nods~
OTOH almost all the characters pretty much suck. I remember slogging through Fugitive Prince thinking, "Oh man, another Dakar chapter. Can't he die already" Lysaer is an ass, but it's excusable because of the geas. This does not stop his condition from being repeatative, though.
Lysaer is horrible.
Arithon and his pseudo-romance with that witch... Elaira maybe ? Never goes anywhere.
Does too. You stopped too soon.
I used to love this series but frankly, it's a chore. And I also recall her whining about RJ's 'endless parade of sequels'.
Heh. She'd probably argue that hers aren't sequels as all the arcs have endings.

The Wars of Light and Shadow ~ Janny Wurts. You should read them, truly.

I much prefered her Cycle of Fire trilogy. It had sorcery, spaceships, and aliens.
