One really gets the impression that most years the Academy *wants* people's first reaction to the Nobel Prize for Literature to be "never heard of". In cases when it goes to some writer who is unknown largely because his country/language is lesser-known in the West, that is perhaps a good thing as it gives those literary markets a bit more attention abroad, but when it's just some European, forgive me if I'm less than impressed, or interested.
I thought it was almost non-negiotable that the award would go to a North African or Middle Eastern writer this year, with the Arab Spring making the region even more notable and the fact that Adonis/Adunis being one of the perennial favourites for the award still without the prize.
There is still an obvious Western Hemisphere/Anglo-Scandinavian bias to the award.

Meh. I guess they were under pressure to produce a Swedish winner again.
