Most of the Culture books are a solid 250-450 pages in length and are great. MATTER and this one are notably larger, and don't seem to have weathered the extra page count very well.


I remembered Consider Phlebas as a relatively short book, so was surprised on the reread that it was rather long. It (and this one) could definitely have been shorter.
