Future stuff/ dystopia/ post apocalyptic is fine though. Example: Songs of Distant Earth, Fahrenheit 451, The Gate to Women's Country, etc. I don't like magic realist stuff or fantasy that starts out or takes place in our world either. Example: harry potter, the lion the witch and the wardrobe, etc. Unfortunately, out of all the sub genres in scifi-fantasy it's magic realism that's most seen as literature. (Marquez, Rushdie, etc) It's not my favorite thing, although I can still appreciate it.
Do you prefer the books you read to be considered "literature" or was that more of a general comment about how people think of fantasy and sci-fi?
It's completely distracting when real world stuff is done badly, so I'd definitely prefer to read full imagination if those were the choices.
