real world in fiction in general. I don't know that I've read too much fantasy that does it (more than, say Harry Potter does, which is not much). But the introduction of history into fictional settings appeals to me. It is one of the main reasons why I love Dumas.
Rowling does the Real World stuff well, I think. It's difficult to date when the books are written from that, which is good. (Or at least, it is as far as I can remember.)
I'm a little iffy about it when real historical details are changed, though. I find that very hit and miss.
