I don't think that reasoning entered into it. Gher Send a noteboard - 20/06/2010 05:43:59 PM
I was just wondering if we could get some discussion here going on the subject of Jon's parents. I'm not widely familiar with the debate, so if it has been resolved or come to a near conclusive decision just smack me and tell me I am dumb. I personally suppose that the Rhaegar and Lyanna theory makes the most sense, and of course, would be the most dramatic so maybe I'm just hoping it will be that. The only problem is that I feel like that even with Ned's honor obsession, he would at the very least tell Cat, I mean, her honor obsession is definitely comprable and it would save young Jon from a lot of misery in his early years.

The evidence is just too strong - if it turns out to be otherwise, a lot of people are going to be pissed off. As to why Ned didn't tell Cat... hard to say. Perhaps he figures that's the safest way to make sure nobody finds out, including Jon - after all, if it got out while Jon was a kid, that would've made him a target.

Maybe, but I doubt Cat would have told anyone and I think Ned trusted her enough.

It doesn't matter how much he trusts her. It's not his secret, so his honor won't let him tell "just one person" or some such.

Even if he was absolutely sure she wouldn't tell anyone, it wouldn't be honorable to divulge the identities of Jon's parents.

And it's been quite a while since I've read the books, so I could be way off.
