The general plot point that the Asha'man would get totally exhausted and could eventually not travel for some time (or possibly fight, but in the end they did use their last forces to fight at Malden) was so obvious in KOD that it had to be a built up for what would come next and Brandon is following what RJ had in mind there, no doubt. But it seems that Brandon may have blundered with the conversation between Grady and Perrin about sending the people home in TGS, with the silly calculations that make abstraction of the tied-off gateways solution. It sounds like Brandon missed the detail that the Asha'man know about tied-off gateways but for some reason have let themselves reach the point of exhaustion before they started doing it.
This, IMO, is a good example of my frustrations with Sanderson's writing. He is really good at working out what you can and can't do with a set system of power - to the extent that Mistborn has hooked me (not much, as I have not yet been able to get past the first quarter) it was the first big fight scene where the hero breaks into the noble's house to rob his safe. On the other hand, possibly because he was trying to get the book out as expeditiously as possible, he seems to overlook a lot of details which leads to frustration because you can't tell now what to believe, and what rules should be. Another example of his skill at this, IMO, was Rand's little trick with gateways when going to meet the Borderlanders. Of course that could be RJ, but it seems more in character with B-Sand, as really creative uses of the Power by WoT characters are few and far between. And then there are things where he only sporadically seems to remember Rand's warder bonds or what their limitations are. I the first chapter, Rand knows what Elayne is feeling from Arad Domon, while, she only knew in the previous book that he had been severely injured in some way and had no clue what he was feeling (and was much closer to him when he was hurt - at that same distance, he was actively thinking/wondering about her, and had no clue what she was feeling). Later on, Rand and Min each wonder what the other is thinking/feeling when they are in the same room! Aviendha & Min only seem aware of his feelings when he is not present, and he walks right past Aviendha without noticing her, when in WH, the bond instantly alerted him to Min's proximity, and he takes it for granted that she is unsurprised to encounter him.
