The DO is the Lord of the Grave.I always assumed that Kari WAS his mother. She spoke true as she saw it. I assumed it was the DO flaunting his power, screwing with Rand's mind, and attempting to show an uncertain Dragon that his cause/purpose was doomed. That Rand was able to continue mission after that (sorry, old grunt taking over) shows the character of the Dragon Reborn.
Meh. That's my 2 cents. And, right now, 4 combat zones, 17 medals, and $2.50 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks (unless you are in front of/behind me- in which case the coffee is free).
