Gawyn just isn't good enough. I even think Bryne would handle Gawyn easily.
Even if one stipulates Gawyn's superior sword skill (and there is no reason to do so), Lan showed in New Spring what superior swordsmanship is worth against him.
I imagine even if Gawyn got the upper hand, Lan could just say something like "Well, I'll be seeing your mom in heaven. Got any message you want me to pass on IN BED?" And Gawyn would freak out and cry.
