AS know things, and there needed to be a reason in the plot for Mat not to go through the mountain. He had to go for the main path.
moving the story is dandy, but it has to be realistic ... and Vanin talking to AS is strange!
I don't have the book handy, but he more or less tells Mat that if you get involved with Aes Sedai, you basically put the leash around your own neck. Speaking from personal experience, perhaps? Additionally he picked up information faster than Siuan expected. Maybe he is more familiar with Aes Sedai than is normal.
