I have a fairly controversial answer... fionwe1987 Send a noteboard - 01/02/2010 08:16:31 PM
Controversial because it involves me claiming, again, that Graendal is not dead. :P

I don't think there is any question that they were a direct result - Rand thought about needing to BF the Forsaken several times, after Moridin made the revelation.

The question is whether the Shadow intended those results.

I can't see it being another way. That whole scene was intended to show Moridin in a very impressive light. Yes, he's evil and wants the end of the world, but he has reasons for wanting that that aren't completely personal.

I just don't see a "mistake" being slipped into that scene. The Balefire thing came up on its own, with no prompting by Rand. The only thing Moridin could have done to make his manipulation clearer is say "hint hint" at the end of that sentence!

See my comments to RPA & Etzel. It's hard for me to see how Moridin & the DO would consider the BF death of any of the Chosen as a net gain, in terms of the damage caused to the Pattern. Presumably, the chaos each Chosen causes in the Pattern is much greater than his/her individual death by BF would cause.

Ahhh.. but what if a huge palace with a large number of people is Balefired, and the Foresaken supposedly in it does not die?

This doesn't even have to be fully Graendal's plan. Moridin could have pressured her to lure Rand to her. And with his access to Rand's mind, could have figured out his plan, and warned Graendal to make it seem like she is dead by Balefire.

This serves two purposes. First, this one event itself will have massively destabilized the Pattern.

Second, it makes Rand think that massive uses of Balefire are a good way to kill the Forsaken. If the super brainy Graendal is dead this way, why not try it on the others?

And we see that it happens. Rand thinks of Balefiring the Seanchan as well.

Of course, in the Graendal case, it wasn't just one death, but, what, hundreds? But, could the Shadow have predicted that Rand/LTT would ever use BF so massively?

With Moridin linked to Rand? Yes, I think that is possible.
In Semirhage's case, the BF effect on the Pattern was negligible, I would imagine. Assuming she was set up, the purpose was to tempt Rand with the TP, not to see Semirhage balefired, I think.

Agree here.

Yep, I'm not really 100% on most things in the series unless there is no doubt. - 02/02/2010 08:03:31 PM 518 Views

Moridin probably just wanted the access key to prevent the Cleansing - 02/02/2010 10:26:11 AM 7020 Views
no reason to take the tool that allowed Rand to Cleanse saidin? - 02/02/2010 01:34:59 PM 587 Views
We don't even know if SH knew about the access key in the box - 02/02/2010 02:09:32 PM 511 Views
So the DO's Hand doesn't know about the AK? And we have a quote with Elza's orders where? - 02/02/2010 02:14:58 PM 530 Views
If Elza had the order to take the access key, she would have taken it - 02/02/2010 02:29:08 PM 536 Views
