The pressure of the closing gateway would also simply press the stick away in your scenario, IMO.

what if a frame of heartstone was fitted just inside the gateway so that when it closes it gets stuck into a groove in the frame... If the heartstone stopped the gateway from closing you now have gateways that are left open permenantly with no more channeling needed... This could create transportation hubs where various doorways to various locations are available for non channeler use...
