1. She has never murdered anyone.
I think this is kind of cool... Rand, Mat and Perrin have killed dozens of people. She's the only one who would have an complete soul in Harry Potter - Rand could make about fifty Horcruxes by now.
Not being a killer is indeed a point in Egwene's favor. I have to disagree with your last sentence though. Rand has never killed anyone for the sole purpose of making a horcrux, let alone fifty of them.I think this is kind of cool... Rand, Mat and Perrin have killed dozens of people. She's the only one who would have an complete soul in Harry Potter - Rand could make about fifty Horcruxes by now.
2. She makes friends quickly.
She's friends with Nynaeve, Moiraine, Elayne, Gawyn, Galad, Rand, Mat, Perrin, Amys, Bair, Melaine, Siuan and Leane. Not bad.
Most con artists are good at making friends. She's friends with Nynaeve, Moiraine, Elayne, Gawyn, Galad, Rand, Mat, Perrin, Amys, Bair, Melaine, Siuan and Leane. Not bad.
3. She has devoted herself to the White Tower and it's traditions and laws and methods.
She always wanted to be an Aes Sedai - this is the least she could do. If she hadn't been this way, she wouldn't be fit for the shawl. Moiraine is going to be proud.
Maybe, but Moiraine is a terrible judge of character. Also, Egwene upends as many Tower rules as she upholds. She always wanted to be an Aes Sedai - this is the least she could do. If she hadn't been this way, she wouldn't be fit for the shawl. Moiraine is going to be proud.
4. She was willing to settle for Rand.
Huh... I recall her rejecting Rand. He was devastated. For a minute. Then he started hitting on Elayne in the same chapter.
He had already lost interest in Egwene. Yes, he was hurt by the breakup, but only because Egwene handled it so stupidly. Who wouldn't be upset when a lifelong friend screams that they don't love you? And it was the other way around, Elayne started hitting on Rand.Huh... I recall her rejecting Rand. He was devastated. For a minute. Then he started hitting on Elayne in the same chapter.
5. Her accomplishments have to have come solely through sheer effort.
Wow, this is so untrue... she's incredibly skilled with the One Power. She's one of the few people who has really honed her Talents. The others mess around, but she took her money and made it into millions. It requires effort of course, or how else would she improve??
I agree with you here.Wow, this is so untrue... she's incredibly skilled with the One Power. She's one of the few people who has really honed her Talents. The others mess around, but she took her money and made it into millions. It requires effort of course, or how else would she improve??
6. She's sensitive.
The Aiel taught her this, and they are among the hardest of people.
And here, although it's pretty irrelevant. The Aiel taught her this, and they are among the hardest of people.
7. She has managed to hold her place in the series despite being superfluous.
Amyrlin Seat and discoverer of immense OP achievements lost for 3,000 years. She's a legend already.
That she is. But it's not a good legend.Amyrlin Seat and discoverer of immense OP achievements lost for 3,000 years. She's a legend already.
7. Tormented by the Forsaken
Second only to Rand, she has been harmed by Lanfear, Aran'gar and Aginor - and hunted by many others. She's a major threat to the Shadow. They even discuss her in their meetings.
All of the main characters have been hunted by Forsaken. Egwene just gets caught more often than most, as she does with every major adversary she faces. The Forsaken do discuss Egwene at their meetings, because she is a valuable asset to the Shadow. Virtually everything she does plays right into their hands.Second only to Rand, she has been harmed by Lanfear, Aran'gar and Aginor - and hunted by many others. She's a major threat to the Shadow. They even discuss her in their meetings.
8. Brave
She tried to fight Lanfear and Aginor to save her friends. She wanted to go help fight Rahvin but was mortally wounded from a previous battle. She helped Rand defeat Couladin despite Moiraine's ire. She faced Gawyn about his mother knowing that she might lose him - and yet she still defended Rand.
Against Lanfear and Aginor, she was fighting to save herself too. It still took courage, but it wasn't entirely altruistic. Now that you mention it, her helping Rand against Couladin probably invalidates point #1. Do we know for sure if she killed any Aiel in that fight? How did she face Gawyn about his mother? He asked her to swear that Rand didn't kill her, which she elected not to do. She withheld all of the information she had that might possibly have swayed him, and just asked him as a favor not to kill the Dragon Reborn. Also, she's known about Gawyn's massive crush on her for at least a year. There was no danger of losing him.She tried to fight Lanfear and Aginor to save her friends. She wanted to go help fight Rahvin but was mortally wounded from a previous battle. She helped Rand defeat Couladin despite Moiraine's ire. She faced Gawyn about his mother knowing that she might lose him - and yet she still defended Rand.
9. Merciful
Didn't kill Renna despite being her tormented slave for weeks. Allowed Moghedien to live. Didn't fight back when the Accepted tripped her in the dinner hall.
She did torture Renna a bit for revenge. She allowed Moghedien to live because to do otherwise would put her friends in serious trouble. Also, she decided that learning a few more magic tricks was more important than bringing one of the most dangerous criminals in history to justice. As for the Accepted, she was probably scared of getting in more trouble.Didn't kill Renna despite being her tormented slave for weeks. Allowed Moghedien to live. Didn't fight back when the Accepted tripped her in the dinner hall.
Anyway, I agree with almost everything Cannoli says about Egwene, and yet I still like her character. I wonder what that says about me...
There is not enough Egwene hate. Three days without ANY is too long.

I particularly like how her declaration of love is practically the first thing she ever says to him.
