I think this is one of those "out of universe" questions. There is no way to really know.
In any event, there is no reason that a balefire would damage another thread. If every brick has its own thread etc then I would think each discrete thing in the pattern must have a thread. Things (people) in different dimensions etc would have separate threads.
Maybe balefiring a portal stone would be special case.
