This always puzzled me.

If people are so terrified of saying the dark one's true name, and it's so rare for someone to actually say it, how does anyone even know his true name?

Assuming writing the name does nothing, I'd think the fear associated with the name would have prevented people from putting it on paper long ago and it would have long since been forgotten by the common people. Eventually scholars would be the only ones who knew it.

It seems to me that over the past several ages his name would have disappeared completely.

Even darkfriends won't say the name.. so how do common folk still know it?
