Mat's scenes were mostly a lot of set-up for the next book: The Tower of Ghenji stuff, Verin's letter, Aludra's cannons. They didn't actually DO anything. I think once he gets to business Cartoon-y Caricature Mat will recede into the background, and his serious strategist side will come out again.
