I don't disagree with Sanderson's intention... entyti Send a noteboard - 01/12/2009 03:53:43 AM

I thought the scene with him complaining about women was just his way of coming to terms with his marriage and love for Tuon. And the part with the intricate backstory seemed to show that he learned a bit after his 'escape' from Ebou Dar. Namely that people need to know the history of the people they are portraying.

Talmanes was really the one who wasn't portrayed right at all. Talmanes never had the mirth that he displayed in this book. It was almost as if he was the straight man who couldn't keep it straight.

...I disagree with his implementation. You are right that Mat's diatribe about women was related to his newfound relationship with Tuon as her husband and his new title as Prince of Ravens. I just feel that the way he goes about letting off steam doesn't feel right.

I disagree with what you gleened from the backstory scene. I rather think that this was spawned from what he experienced at Hinderstap. Giving his men a backstory to fall back on keeps their identities hidden while giving them an oppurtunity to gather information. Again, my issue isn't that wasn't a good read (I rather liked it), but it was too much, and without cause. Mat often is too much, but there is method behind the madness. This seemed more like just madness.

I completely agree with you regarding Talmanes.
