Well now that the initial shock of BLOODY SPLEEN RAND IS ON TOP OF DRAGONMOUNT SCREAMING TO HIMSELF has worn off, I can critic the scene better now. At the time, I was just too into the moment for anything to really destroy it. First off, the whole thing with the purpose of life just went too far. It was great until he said, "love changed everything." It really detracted from the scene. Don't get me wrong, when he was thinking about all his past lives and remebering hope, love and joy, it was pretty awesome, but singling love out like that was just overused and corny.
Secondly, I think he should have cried first in the whole laughter and tears thingamajig.

Rand was so consumed with despair there was nothing else left. Coupled with Ishys explicit declaring what I've always believed (that the DO will annihilate existence if free, not corrupt the world into a kind "Dark Creation") he had no incentive to win the Last Battle. That would mean great pain and suffering for both him and all dear to him, whereas the DO means the peace of oblivion. This had to happen; sorry if Love Is All You Need sounds a bit corny, but I happen to think it's true, so the ending not only works for me (even if the execution feels weird) but it's essential. In Randland, it means the only hope of the world is now racing toward his own lone hope rather than eagerly embracing death in a way that ensured the world died with him.
The last scene...
