Couldn't Egwene (or suitable replacement) have become Amyrlin without all that? Couldn't she have caught the eyes of the Ajah heads through her Dreams and warnings?
Sure it was convenient, etc., but that's not what I'm getting at. I'm trying to look at what exactly the benefits of the Rebellion were vs. doing nothing. And I really don't see much, surely not enough to warrant such a prolonged plotline.
In the end, I think the plotline goes down alongside Elayne's Reconquista and Perrin's hunt for Private Ryan (er, Faile) - unnecessarily long (although a better read by leaps and bounds). But in the end, almost moot.

I do think that the deck was stacked by the author in Egwene's favour, so to speak, with very convenient things like Elaida's deranged rant in front of the Sitters. But it's evident that Egwene contributes to the undermining of Elaida's authority, among other things through that very incident.
You're right of course that Elaida would've been captured in her sleep no matter what, but Egwene's time in the Tower was necessary to let her catch the eye of the Ajah heads, and allow her to be palatable to both sides once Elaida is out of the picture.
So I guess it depends on precisely what you're arguing - if you're saying it all went too easily and Egwene was written as if she was a big ta'veren, I quite agree. If you're saying the whole plotline was unnecessary... well, no.

Egwene could've done most of what she did without screentime. *NM*
