The Oaths are pretty literal-minded. As long as
The wording of the Black Ajah oath though... it's ridiculous. Why, why, why would an organization that is steeped in twisting words and finding loopholes leave something like that open!?

Is it possible that you can't use an object of the One Power (Oath Road) to completely foreswear light allegiance? It could be a safety mechanism programmed into it at the time it was created, when the DO has already started recruiting. The only way to make it work would be to leave an opening for a return to the light, trusting to greed and ambition to ensure that most don't foreswear it.
On the other hand, there is a strong indication that that oath used some other binding mechanism? Anyone found it curious that Ingtar (tGH) was able to also be redeemed "in the hour of his death"? Could there be a way to enforce it also on non-channelers? I think it's the only way (other than balefire) for reformed darkfriends to avoid having DO snatch their soul when you die.

That and any oath on the Oath Rod relies very heavily on the swearer's interpretation of the oath.

True. There's a scene where Cadsuane is told about Aiel in the city and she says "I hadn't noticed."
