Thoughts on Rand, the Choedan Kal, and missed opportunities. Logain Send a noteboard - 17/11/2009 03:51:27 AM
You know, I was disappointed that Rand destroyed the Choedan Kal. So much good could have been done with it.

If I had the Choedan Kal and was Rand I would have done the following: Gone to the blight border in Saldaea, near World's end. I would have then used the Choedan Kal to raise a "wall" of mountains up about 20-30K feet as far as the eye could see to the east. I'd then gate to the east a little ways and raise up another section of mountains to match the first section (joining them together to make one big wall).

From the way the Choedan Kal is described raising up some mountains to form a wall doesn't seem to be that big of an effort. After all, Rand thinks of how he could destroy entire continents, even the world with the Choedan Kal. So my speculation is it wouldn't be hard at all (probably pretty quick) to raise up a large section of wall. After a couple of hours I think I could have the entire blight effectively "walled" off.

That would have helped humanity from the imminent attack of trollocs. Or, if it is true that the Choedan Kal really had that much power, then how about gating to Tarwin's Gap and destroying all of the trollocs in a second or two by raining fire down on them with a tied off weave that wouldn't dissipate for a an hour or two. Gate away after a couple of seconds and no Forsaken could interfere.

It's too bad that Rand isn't thinking straight. He could have completely destroyed all of the trollocs or alternatively walled them in, thus alleviating any need to have armies in the borderlands. Imagine how many forces Rand could free up if nobody had to guard the blight anymore.

I almost want to say that Rand is stupid, but I know he isn't. But why, oh why do the characters not do the most obvious things in the books? Why?
