Re: Not outraged on their behalf... Knightscape Send a noteboard - 13/11/2009 09:56:01 PM
...it's not like it makes them any deader. Getting outraged on their behalf doesn't make much sense.

The only extra risk by balefiring them (instead of just killing them in some other form of collateral damage) is the danger to the Pattern itself. And there's pretty much no other way Rand could have successfully tricked Graendal in order to eliminate her...

I'm outraged at the damage to the Pattern. There were so many ways Rand could have altered this.

Here's one...

He disguises himself as Ramshalan. He goes with the same message. However, he is holding the source all the while, and has the CK concealed with him.

The moment he gives his message, Graendal would try to compel him. All he has to do at this point is Balefire her.

Its pretty foolproof, since holding the source makes him immune to her compulsion.

There, Graendal is permanently dead, he know that she is, and the Pattern is not destabilized.

If this was so easy to do than why didn't Nynaeve or Min suggest this to him?

The pattern wanted him to do this.
If the pattern didn't want him to do this, than the pattern would have intervened. (Rand gets ready to balefire Graendal and the castle, just as he is about to complete the weave a pidgeon drops dead and falls on his arm knocking the Choendal Kal from his grasp)
All good things come to those who wait.
