What about the coat? Since when does it make a coat vanish? Do coats have threads in the Pattern?

Before, balefire shot holes in inanimate stuff like Palaces and boats (clothing worn by victims vanished it was with the victim, unless he was hitting every article of clothing at once). Now it vaporizes a coat? How did it know to stop at the coat? Did the threads that hold the sleeves on count to make it one solid object? This was way too much like magic.
