he shot the baelfire at a coat or something and the coat disappeared.
Its never worked that way. If it was an inanimate object then a hole would appear through the object where the baelfire passed. The object only disappeared if it had a thread in the patern like a living creature.

What about the coat? Since when does it make a coat vanish? Do coats have threads in the Pattern?
