All of Egwene's immunity to the snares that prevented the sisters you mention from doing the same (and actually, Tarna was doing that, Elaida simply was not listening, and unlike Egwene, she actually had better things to do than make a martyr out of herself) is not of her doing. Quite frankly, my reaction upon reading these things was not about Egwene and her actions as such, but an assessment that any group who needed to be told these things deserves whatever fate befalls them, and especially does not serve protected or exalted status that the Aes Sedai demand as their due. Until Egwene shows some sign of reversing this position, rather than upholding it, I will remain indifferent to any so-called "heroism" on her part on behalf of the Tower. The most selfless & courageous sacrifice in the world for a useless cause is still useless. You know why you don't see Nynaeve, Cadsuane and Elayne making the same sacrifices as Egwene or being in her position? Because they have found worthy causes to work for and to offer their time and energies, namely the Dragon Reborn and the most powerful and decent country in the known world.
I'm sorry, but that just makes no sense. Its like saying Claus von Stauffenberg's uprising against Hitler was useless because Nazi Germans deserved what fate befell them.
The Aes Sedai have become, as an organization, a bunch of idiots who have narrowed their focus and let the world slip into chaos. Egwene never once disputes this, never once says the Aes Sedai are okay as they are. She has reversed some of their gravest idiocies (including gathering Novices, accepting and purging out the Blacks, etc.).
Whatever their flaws, this is an organization that can do a vast amount of good if it pulls its act together. And Egwene intends to do just that.
Why? On what basis do you claim it is reasonable to assume I was blindly criticizing her? Why don't you actually look at the words. This original post was not even all that critical of Egwene, merely pointing out the hyperbolic expression of her portrayal, comparing it to my parodic recapitulation of the series.
Really? Near-sleep ramblings of an exhausted woman who has physically wearied herself in battle is cause foe criticism are now reasons to mock her? Especially when the same woman, when awake, assesses her actions as ultimately fruitless in its main purpose?
Had you been objective, that is what you would have pointed out. That it was easy to be confused and think Egwene was some superb hero, but she had the sense to see that courage that does not produce the desired results is not something to boast about.
Except she had her primary advisors opposing the increase of the guard. What opposition did Egwene face in utilizing Verin's books?
None, because she engineered the situation so there could be none. But she did have opposition to her course of action in the Tower, from her primary adviser who is a lot more forceful and a lot less obedient, namely Siuan.
I cited those things in response to sidious' ludicrous claim that Elayne was completely incompetant and saved from her military errors by the backstopping of her main supporters. I merely cited the key use of gateways as being as likely to come from Elayne as from anyone in her entourage, if not moreso, see as she was the lead channeler. It was a completely different type of argument, which is why I don't cite other people's criticisms of other characters in a discussion about one in particular. I have never offered those up as examples of great things that she did, and I only cited them to refute a claim that other people's leadership won her war for her.
Very well. Then tell me one action of Elayne's in the Andoran succession that was not obviously sensible that was worthy of praise.
Well, why don't you find the place where I called it a stroke of genius or excused Dyelin's lapse?
I'm merely saying that you praise Elayne and she has done nothing but show common sense, and when Egwene does the same, you dismiss it.
But NEITHER is a good reason! That is NOT a reason to claim she should have the Lion Throne! A common sense notion is NOT grounds for claiming she's a suitable or great ruler.
In the face of obviously lunatic candidates? In the face of a polity divided by the Shadow's actions?
The ideas Egwene and Elayne come up with may not be intellectually brilliant, being instead in the realm of common sense. But the impressive thing is that they come up with common sense notions when the people surrounding them are so distracted by personal prejudices and the Shadow, and then show remarkable tenacity in ensuring that sense prevails in their leadership, when so many others would let events distract and bias them.
It is called keeping a clear head in difficult times, and I don't think you will deny that Egwene has done remarkably well in that direction.
Assuming they were capable of analyzing that datum in seconds after being released from physically stressful captivity following a sleepless night, and recalling another datum that informed Elayne on the appropriate course of action.
You realize that Egwene came up with her plan of action for the Blacks, came up with a solution to dispose of Verin's body without arousing suspicions, and then prepared a well organized defense against the Seanchan all after being locked in a box and regularly beaten for days on end, right? Elayne's plan pales to nothing compared to what Egwene achieved in her much worse physical state.
Birgitte was not opposed to that tactical idea, she was just not bright ennough to realize where Arymilla would be. Anyone would have realized the best thing to do is strike at her, as Elayne stated earlier, when she claimed that was the only information about Arymilla she was interested in. Despite Birgitte & Dyelin being told about the attack on the gate, neither one of them made the connection. Elayne did, which is how she knew what to do. If Arymilla had NOT been with that force, it would NOT have been an obvious tactical move! The smartest thing to do would have been to bring her force to aid Dyelin in holding the gate, but that would have allowed Arymilla & co to retreat to safety when her forces failed to take the gate. The flanking attack was only an "obvious" manuever once Elayne put all the data together.
What if Arymilla had not been with that force? Encircling them to defeat them was still a better tactic than trying to push at them from one direction. Elayne's soldiers would not have been able to charge, and would have been close to useless in the press around the gates. They could have strengthened the defense, yes, but encircling the attackers, irrespective of whether Arymilla was present, was the better course of action.
And it does NOT make her a good ruler, nor did I ever claim it DID! I cited it to refute a claim of her military ineptitude! All I did was say that she did NOT screw up the military situation!
So, if planning in advance and coming up with a good tactic do not make Elayne a good candidate, what does? And what such quality does Egwene lack?
She did no such thing. All she did was skew the casualties slightly more towards the Tower's favor. The disaster still happened and the extent to which the Tower did NOT go down to total defeat was due entirely to the limitations the Seanchan imposed on themselves. She did not drive them away, they never had any intention of staying. She did not prevent them from getting a damane with knowledge of Traveling (not that she could have, nor is it her fault). She did not avert any disaster, aside from a few more losses on the Tower's part or a few less losses on that of the Seanchan.
Bull shit. The raid had become a full scale attack, as far as results went, when Egwene entered the fray. As Saerin said, they stayed so long because there was virtually no resistance, and had Egwene's strong defense not drawn the Seanchan to the Novices quarters, they would have roamed the Tower longer, and could have crippled the smaller pockets of resistance much more easily.
Yes, the Seanchan got Travelling, which made this a defeat for the Tower, as Egwene herself pointed out. But should they decide to launch an attack again, using Travelling this time, the Tower actually has the numbers to beat them back, and that is entirely due to Egwene. But for her, it would be a majorly depleted Tower facing the Seanchan with Travelling.
"So you can see some things, if you are led by the hand." (I don't have aCoS handy, so I might be misquoting Moridin)
Doesn't matter if you misquote him. Flawed logic and twisted perspective are traits you share with him, so I'll allow you to claim what you want as his statement.
I would actually contend that choosing to devote herself to the good of this wretched group condemns Egwene. A recurring theme in my "Egwene's evil" series was her siding with these pathetic, idiotic, blind, prejudiced and common-senseless wastes of life over her friends and the Dragon Reborn.
She did not! I'm tired to pointing to the quote in tPoD where she explicitly states that she believes the Tower split to be necessary since without it, the Aes Sedai would interfere with Rand too much.
More importantly, a lot of the wretchedness of the Aes Sedai can be laid at Elaida's feet, so Egwene's opposition of that woman so she could lead the Tower to better times and greater use in the LB are entirely justified.
Well Brandon Sanderson has officially killed off the last volume of the Epic Saga of the Chosen One.
