This is why Nynaeve found Rand's short-hop trick "clever." Say A is starting point, B is close to A, and C is the destination (far away). If one doesn't know A well, one can Travel from A to B (short distances for Traveling are easy). The act of Traveling to a location makes that location well enough known to travel from it. As a result, after Traveling to B, you can Travel anywhere you'd like (i.e. C).
