Theory: what Cadsuane will teach Rand and all the Ashaman randfandom Send a noteboard - 03/11/2009 07:44:20 AM
Back in book 7 or 8, Min has a viewing that Cadsuane will teach Rand and the Ashaman something they have to learn, but which they will not like to learn it from her. Rand retains her as his advisor primarily based on that viewing.

Cadsuane has her own goals, of course: Get close to Rand with the stated goal of teaching him humanity (laughter and tears).

While the alliance produces remarkable results, with Cadsuane saving Rand's life or freedom on numerous occasions, it is clear that she is not the right person to help him discover his caring, tender side. She acts as instigator, but after 4 books, the only feelings Rand has towards her are respect, fear, growing resentment and even hate. Obviously she will teach him and the Ashaman something, but not laughter and tears.

A possible answer may be at the end of TGS chapter 14 "A box opens".

"One of the first things Cadsuane had done after capturing those female a'dam was put one on and practice ways to escape from it. She'd done so under carefully controlled circumstances, of course, with women she trusted to help her escape. They'd eventually had to do that. Cadsuane had been able to discover no way out on her own.
But if your enemy was planning to do something to you, you had to discover how to counter it. Even if it meant leashing yourself. Al'Thor couldn't see this. When she asked, he simply mattered about "that bloody box" and being beaten."

I think she will teach them that to be truly strong, they must make themselves vulnerable and take risks that require full trust - in this particular case - they have to have complete trust in the women channelers with whom they will practice, since the male a'dam can only be controlled by women. I can see why this is necessary and certainly why the male channelers will hate doing it.
