Just in case you missed it in the title, this post will discuss TGS. Sorry for the redundancy, but I would really hate to spoil anything for anyone.
Let me just start off by saying that I am very grateful to BS for completing this series, and what a job he did! I am blown away by how much I enjoyed reading TGS.
Here are my questions and my own personal answers.
#1 Whose POV did you enjoy the most?
I can't believe that my answer to this question is Egwene and Rand. Egwene and Elayne have always been my least favorite story arcs. I am sad to say that for the first time ever I skipped sections of WH and COT in my last re-read before TGS. RJ really slowed the pace with those two girls and I shuddered thinking about reading their POVs. Rand has always been my least favorite taveren. I always enjoy reading his sections but nothing like how much I enjoyed when reading TGS. He was so freaking dark and scary and on the brink of sanity. WOW. You never knew what Rand was going to do. The scene with Tam gives me chills to even think about.
#2 Whose POV did you least enjoy?
Another tie and another personal shocker. Mat and Perrin get the razzy here. Perrin was my favorite until Faile gets captured. Mat was co-favorite until Perrin's sprial into doucheland, then claimed top honors until TGS. Perrin is still driving me crazy with his one track mind whining. My complaint with Mat is more that I think BS missed the mark on his personality. He tried to make him too smart allicky and kind of a jerk. The attempt at humor was off as were the characters around Mat; the banter between other characters and Mat was extremely lacking. I don't think BS is to blame, it must be very difficult to write from a character's POV that you did not create. Especially when he has as much personality as Mat.
#3 What was the biggest suprise?
I want to say the Verin revelation, however, I have suspected that Verin was either a DF or posing as a DF for quite some time. So I guess my answer is just how freaking close Rand is to losing it. Awesome and scary at the same time.
I will probably have to re-read TGS soon, but I am also very excited to finally move on and read some things that have been collecting dust on my book shelf (Sapkowski The Witcher, Blood of the Elves, Sanderson Warbreaker, etc.) I re-read the series again to prepare for TGS, just like I did for WH, COT, and KOD and I need a break.
