Towards the end of the book The Dragon Reborn, Moiraine Aes Sedai is trying to figure out who the living Forsaken are. Here is the passage:

“I... may know who he was.” Egwene paused with an uncertain frown. “At least, I may have a clue. Verin showed me a page from an old book that mentioned Ba’alzamon and Ishamael together. It was almost High Chant and very nearly incomprehensible, but I remember something about ‘a name hidden behind a name.’ Maybe Ba’alzamon was Ishamael.”
“Perhaps,” Moiraine said. “Perhaps it was Ishamael. But if it was, at least nine of the thirteen still live. Lanfear, and Sammael, and Ravhin, and... Paah!"

Who is this Paah? I don't remember hearing him mentioned, but Moiraine Aes Sedai does so here. Is it a nickname used by someone Forsaken, or is it a new, unknown Forsaken that only Moiraine Aes Sedai knows about?

Please no spoilers from later books, if possible.


She says 'nine of thirteen', and is clearly enumerating from among them. The thirteen are accounted for, so for your hypothesis to be consistent, 'Paah' would have to be one of those thirteen.


I don't think that is conclusive to say there is no new Forsaken character. From what I know of the series so far, it looks like the Dark One can raise or create new Forsaken to keep the numbers at 13. It seems he really likes that number! 13 Dreadlords and Myrrdraal are also mentioned as something he can use to convert people. So, I would think he wants to keeps the numbers of Forsaken at thirteen.

As of the end of The Dragon Reborn, I think there are three or four dead Forsaken? Two died at the end of The Eye of the World, one at the end of The Great Hunt (I think they died, but not sure), and one dies at the end of The Dragon Reborn. I would think that the Dark One has been working to make new Forsaken to replenish his losses.

Moiraine knows a lot that the other characters don't know, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if she has knowledge of a newly raised Forsaken!
