Would Wheel of Time gone to 15-16 books without the internet exploding it's popularity? Or would Robert Jordan instead had somehow wrapped it up in a more concise tighter say 5-6 volumes?

I definitely feel the ability to digest them and grasp their intricacies was enabled almost completely by discussion lists/forums and the awesome searchable databases online.

While it can also be argued that they fueled publicity, I haven't found myself able to enjoy them as much without understanding them, and haven't understood them well until I started digging about online.

The LOTR series and others have benefited similarly (though posthumously) but their scope was so much more limited that I think it was more conducive to smaller book club discussions etc to try and get ones' head around them entirely.
