One theory that I've been peddling for a few years is that the Dark One's strategic mistake was to take on a physical form - which we are led to believe that Shaidar Haran is.
In Fain's PoV we find him wondering what would happen if he cut a Myrddraal with the dagger. Some even speculated that Shaidar Haran was the result of a halfman that Fain had done this to, but this would seem unlikely.
Yes, it would be a little LotR-ish to have Shaidar Haran finished off by Fain, but borrowing bits and pieces from other stories never seemed to bother RJ too much, did it? I'll bet you anything the Superfade will be Fain's coup de grâce. Possibly the two characters will cancel each other out in the process.
As for Rand, his main duel will likely be with Moridin. This would be a great way of completing the cirle back to the early books. And remember that Moridin/Ishy even thinks of him and Rand as the champions of the Dark One and the Creator, locked in battle since the dawn of time.
And there I've strayed from the topic again...

That would basically mean that Fain will be central to the conclusion...

True-- but Fain still has a role left in this series at this point

Unlikely. We've already seen that trick. It would make for bad storytelling. *NM*

I think it's more important to ask what the Shadar Logoth evil actually is.
