Just around this, I didn't think it was post the Breaking, as at that point I think people were willing to trust the female Aes Sedai and get whatever help they needed, but later post the Trolloc Wars or Hundred Years War, when there may have been instances of Aes Sedai interfering too much leading to the creation of the Oaths to regain lost trust.

Not that pertinent to the overall discussion, but just wanted to check my understanding around the history of the oaths

All three Oaths were in place by the end of the Trolloc Wars here is what the Companion says, which intimates that the Oath against speaking untrue words came about as early as the end of the Breaking

Three Oaths. Sworn to by all Accepted becoming Aes Sedai on the Oath Rod: 1) to speak no word that is not true; 2) to make no weapon with which one man may kill another; and 3) never to use the One Power as a weapon except against Shadowspawn or Darkfriends, or in the last extreme defense of her own life or that of her Warder or another Aes Sedai. The first and third oaths came about as a result of ordinary people’s suspicion toward the Aes Sedai, and were in place before the beginning of the Trolloc Wars, possibly as much as five hundred years earlier. The second oath grew from tales passed down among Aes Sedai regarding the War of the Shadow, and was the first created after that war. If they did so knowing that it would significantly reduce their lifespan, they had to have a strong motivation. Later women raised were not told, and so knowledge of the effect was lost. In the days after the Time of Madness, Aes Sedai expected to live as much as seven hundred to eight hundred years, barring accidents. With the advent of the Three Oaths, Aes Sedai lifespan was reduced to a maximum of two hundred to three hundred years, and the phenomenon known as Aes Sedai “agelessness” came about, which meant that it was simply impossible to put an age to the Aes Sedai. The cumulative effect of the Three Oaths is what produced this agelessness. There was no agelessness during the War of the Shadows, of course, and little or none during the Compact of the Ten Nations. All three oaths were in place by the Trolloc Wars, certainly by the end.

Interesting info, and interesting which oath was in place shortly after the breaking, when I thought power wrought weapons would be useful against the Trollocs etc, and perhaps the oath against lying more useful to try and prevent Aes Sedai turning to the shadow, though perhaps they didn't foresee this.

Yes, I find that all 3 Oaths are aimed at garnering trust from the "common" man, and all stem back to the War of Power. The OP as a weapon or used to create weapons is probably the most frightening thing a normal human could imagine during the WoP and the years throughout the Breaking. But I can see why Aes Sedai would focus on the need for normal humans to trust the words they said after such a duplicitous time as the Collapse and the WoP when so many Aes Sedai had turned to the Shadow.

The big problem with the Oaths has always been how little normals understand the Power. Sure after several thousand years villagers know the legends of the Oaths, but without first hand experience they mean nothing to a person who encounters an Aes Sedai. Sadly it's the Oaths themselves that allowed, in part, for the proliferation of the Black. Because Aes Sedai believed the Oaths inviolable they took for granted that no Sister could become a dark friend and still keep her secrets. Little did they know they could be unbound.
