Though with books and movies the only preparation possible is steeling oneself against disappointment. That made AMoL less underwhelming than it would otherwise have been. Naetheless, I am still angry Bela died while Faile and Olver lived. Apparently bad tempered whining and viciousness are virtues in Randland, and stoic good humor and faithfulness vices. Maybe that explains what happened to the Trakand brothers;
Just because Gawyn's only Trakand sibling exhibits far more traditionally manly qualities of responsibility and competant combat leadership is no reason to refer to Elayne as his brother. In fact, since they are the only known set of brothers in the series (Galad's relationship with Rand was fairly irrelevant), you probably didn't need to stick their not-shared last name in there. If you did need to modify "brothers", 'Elayne's' is shorter to write than 'Trakand' anyway.View original post

I get it: Galad was a Damodred, not Trakand; my bad. Very subtle.

View original posttoo bad for Gawyn he matured beyond his contrariness, else he might have survived (except, of course, he probably would have committed suicide-by-battle when Egwene died.)
Speaking of maturity and Egwene's death, how awesome is it that Rand's parting gift to her was a ribbon, which, in Egwene's story, generally represents immaturity in some way? Or that the ultimate role of their relationship is that her passing is what convinces Rand that the whole "friends and followers dying" issue is actually rather tolerable after all? Well, that just fits my prediction Jordan always intended to subordinate the Amyrlin along with everyone else to the Dragon at Tarmon Gaidon, even (or especially) if he had to do it over her dead body. While her critics may dislike Jordans effort to ennoble Egwenes death, there is an argument her growing arrogant false modesty was simply to set the stage for a genuinely humble epiphany of her own: That her role, while critical, was not the DECISIVE one; in the end, she was as expendable as anyone but the DRAGON, and her sacrifice was cheap at twice the price if it contributed to a victory that could never be anyones but Rands.

Yes; he grew beyond "I can ignore the rules and everyone must obey me because I know best."

Because that's clearly Egwene's job, and there wasn't room for two of them in that relationship *NM*
