Do we have evidence for Sammael, other than the fact that he was a great general? That's a genuine question – I haven't read that far back in many years – but if not, it's a circular argument in his case.

Another thing I learned is that one can attack Demandred in the open, but that Demandred's army will do nothing to try to kill that person once the fight is over. To illustrate my point, why the hell are Galad and Lan still alive? Lan can kill Demandred surrounded by a circle of Sharans but nobody tries to get revenge after he kills Bao the Wyld? I guess I didn't understand why Galad was allowed to escape or why Lan survived as long as he did.
I think Galad was presumed dead. As for Lan, if your loyalty is to a person rather than a nation, why fight once that person's dead?
What would have been really cool is if Lan suddenly discovered he had automatically become the Wyld by killing Demandred, but alas, this didn't happen.
