He was a force as deadly to the Shadow as he was to the Light. He could personally kill a Myrdraal with ease. He was responsible for attacking the Two Rivers, and wounding Rand, and much more.
In terms of WoT's cosmology, yes, he was an aberration. But in terms of the narrative, he was a wild card, a third party. He was basically WoT's Gollum. And.... he turned out to be essentially irrelevant to the plot.
